On this engine the PAS belt is tensioned by swinging the pump outwards. Although a screw jack adjuster is present this is only for use by the service network. In this implementaion of a closed loop adjuster tool we used an air cylinder between the crank pulley and the PAS pulley to tension the belt. A predefined air pressure brings the tension into the approximate correct range and then the tension is brought exactly to target in incremental steps. Each tension measurement made by the optical sensor head is compared with the target tension. By admitting or releasing air from the cylinder accordingly, the exact belt target tension can be reached quickly. This tool is particularly fast in operation and can set target tension in under 3 seconds.
